Embroidery machines for the home user, are a relatively new product. Of course, businesses that have incorporated embroidery in their products or services, have had access to these machines for some time. But they have only really been available to the 'domestic' market for about the last ten years, and of course these days, there are several to choose from.
An embroidery machine looks pretty much like an ordinary electric sewing machine, but it differs in that it stitches designs on to your fabric for you. It does this by having a computer inside of it. The computer stores the designs and guides the needle in creating the design that you want. It's really rather clever and reminds me a little like the pianolas of yesteryear, that had a tune punched into holes on a sheet of card and this was fed through the pianola and it automatically played the tune. Right, well that's given you some idea of my age!
To create a design on the fabric, you choose a pre-set pattern, place the fabric under the needle (kept stiff with an embroidery hoop which come in different sizes), load the machine with the desire colored thread and then start the machine.
Unlike a traditional electric sewing machine, there is no foot pedal to start and run the machine - you simply press a button. Also you can start the machine and let it run on its own whilst it sews the design for you.
You will have to change the color of the thread if you are using more than one color for the design, so I don't suggest you go out shopping and expect the project to be finished on your return...
Most machines come with some built-in designs such as alphabets that can be used for monogramming and you can purchase designs of virtually anything from Disney characters to wild flowers. You can also download patterns from the Internet on to memory cards that you can then insert in you machine. The Brother PE770 does this and in fact it is one of the few machines on the market that combines both the embroidery and conventional sewing in one machine. On some machines you scan a design onto your computer, then digitize it for embroidery.
As you can imagine, this opens up a whole load of possibilities for creativity, but some people do say that it can be time-consuming for example changing the colored thread each time. However, you can get machines that do this automatically and I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I think it would be darn quick to create a beautifully embroidered tablecloth using such a machine, as opposed to embroidering by hand.
If you are new to embroidery machines, I think it's a good idea to go and take a look at one performing in perhaps an in-store demonstration. The machines do include a 'learning curve' so it's important to see the process in action. Many machines have lots of bells and whistles which can get the creative juices flowing in ways that perhaps you'd never thought about before.
