Get Lots of Fab New Quilting Designs with Heavy Supplies

After four years in Greece, I was really looking forward to coming home to California for one simple reason: fabric stores. Not only were the fabrics very expensive in Greece, but the variety was seriously lacking. The few quilting fabrics I found were being sold as curtain and home decor fabric. And, the prices reflected that. Sure, I had numerous online options, but I'm not comfortable relying on the computer screen to accurately reflect colors and some nameless stranger to decide for me whether the fabric's weave and texture are the quality I prefer. For the most part, I relied on the fabric and quilting supplies I brought with me.

On my first trip to my favorite fabric store, I was both happy and disappointed. When making quilts, I like the traditional look so I was happy to see the same great assortment of calico fabrics. On further inspection, though, I was highly upset to see that the quality of the fabric had gone down and the pricing had gone up. Substantially. The plain muslin I buy for my hand-dyed fabrics was better quality than most of it.

Unless I rely heavily on coupons and sales, I doubt I will be buying much printed fabric in the future. Luckily, I did learn to dye fabrics and love the looks of my marbled colors in quilts. On the plus side, these hand-dyed fabrics are much better for quilt embroidery than printed calicoes. This takes a lot of my decisions away from me, which is a good thing because I can easily go overboard in my fabric choices and in adding embroidery quilting to my projects!

Of course, I did see one grouping of fabrics that I fell in love with. All of them began with a black base and then had various design elements in shades of blue and green. Very elegant and nothing girly about it, making it perfect for quilts for my husband and son. They share black and green as their favorite colors. I could blend these printed fabrics with some of my hand-dyes. Making quilts with this combination would be fun! And, it would also be challenging trying to mesh everything together while adding machine embroidery quilt designs that accent the design elements of the printed fabric. Great, now I've got a quilt stuck in my head!

Of course, if I got started now, I'd have to buy a lot of new quilting supplies since mine won't be here for six more weeks. There is a sewing machine here that I can use, but no embroidery machine, so I wouldn't be able to try out my ideas for quilt embroidery ahead of time. Oh, why do I have to be one of those people who have to plan everything out? It would be so freeing to just start stitching, changing and adding as I go along and then using the final embroidery quilting to tie it all together!

Hmmm. I do have several coupons, though. There is no reason in the world why I couldn't at least get my fabric purchases made, is there? Of course, I may get twenty more ideas between now and when I can actually get started. But, I do believe that is why we quilters have a fabric stash.

It's all good!
