Have you noticed that fabric is showing up on all sorts of paper crafting projects? Have you wanted to try using fabric on your handmade cards but have been afraid or hesitant to give it a try? You may be intimidated by using fabric on your next card - I know I was at first. I don't own a sewing machine and rarely break out a needle a thread -- but I'm here to tell you it is easier than you think to add fabric to your paper crafting projects! Hey if I can do it, I have no doubt that you can too! And the best part - no sewing required!
I realized that there were some misconceptions about using fabric. Once I got past these myths I was able to get past my fear of using fabric on my handmade card and scrapbooking projects.
Myth #1: Fabric is fabric
Sure fabric is well fabric but when you are paper crafting think of fabric as 'paper'. Look at fabric as paper with a softer texture like sueded paper. Once you start thinking of fabric as paper, the fear of using it on a card suddenly goes away. After all you know what to do with paper when you create a handmade card, scrapbook page or paper crafting project. The same principles apply for fabric. You use it in the same way you would use patterned paper. And just like paper you can tear it, distress it and die cut it!
Tear your fabric to give it a frayed edge - great for masculine projects.
Distress your fabric with inks and paint to give it a worn, vintage feel.
Die cut fabric to create flowers, leaves, all sorts of shapes and more!
Myth #2: I've never, ever used fabric for paper crafting before
I bet you are already using fabric on your cards and scrapbooking pages and don't even realize it! Ribbon, yes ribbon - satin, gingham, velvet, twill, and lace ribbon - just to name a few! And just like ribbon you can make a wide variety of embellishments using fabric such as handmade Lolli's and twisted ribbon flowers.
Myth #3: You need a sewing machine to work with fabric
Are you thinking 'but it is fabric, don't you need to stitch it?? Don't I need a sewing machine or at least a needle and some thread??' My answer to you is nope, you don't need a sewing machine and you don't need a needle and thread. A regular, old glue stick will do the trick! Of course you could use a sewing machine or needle and thread if you really wanted to but it is really not necessary. I find that burnishing the fabric with a bone folder helps the glue stick adhere to my project.
So break out of your comfort zone; as you can see there is nothing to be afraid of. The myths have been debunked! Go ahead take your paper crafting project to the next level and add some fabric to your next handmade card or scrapbook page; I bet you will love the results!
