Development Of Industrial Sewing Equipment

Sewing machines were created centuries ago to modernize the process of mending and creating clothes. Although they have expanded to other uses, the primary usages and popularity for sewing machines date back to the industrial revolution. Many different types have been created from individual usage to large-scale clothing manufacturing operations. The development of sewing into industrial equipment takes place as the result of certain causes and effects, which will be examined, such as the need for bag closing equipment.

Early Prototypes

During the 1790's an English inventor named Thomas Saint patented the first sewing machine. It is possible that he created a prototype however one was never found. Many other prototypes began appearing in different cultures around this time. In 1830 French tailor Barthelemy Thimonnier patented the first sewing machine in France that eventually went on to tailor uniforms for the French Army. During the French Revolution, unfortunately, other tailors, for fear of being driven out of business, torched his factory of over 80 sewing machines. Americans developed a prototype in 1832, which used an eye-pointed needle. The machine required reworking, and eventually was abandoned. Years later Englishmen William Newton Wilson discovered the patented schematic for a sewing machine and redesigned the 'looper' or stringing assembly. As a result a new working sewing machine was created and Wilson immediately became one of many to be world renowned for becoming a sewing machine manufacturer. Created for individual human uses, large factories began popping up and more liberties were taken on the original design.

Reinventing the Wheel

Engineer Isaac Merritt Singer, made famous for creating the Signer brand sewing machines was an engineer that capitalized on an already sound idea. After seeing the new sewing machines in a tailor shop in Boston he had an idea. By taking the fabric and fixing some clumsy design flaws, Singer created a joint venture that eventually supplied millions of sewing machines to their largest customer; Clothing Manufacturers.

With the combination of the singer machine, and the desire for cheaper faster methods to assemble clothes, the availability of ready to wear clothing, a first for consumers during the mid 1800's, was established. The Industrial Revolution carried the sewing machine throughout the world, being used to create large volumes of clothing with quick speeds and low prices.

As innovation continued expanding, generations continued to expand the uses of the sewing machine.

Food Packaging Sewing

Combined with preservation techniques, sewing machines can be used for consumer and commercial bag closing equipment. Alternating stitch patterns and advances in sewing needle durability allow for a wide range of materials to now be sewn together. Dry food and liquids can now be preserved using this same technology. Rougher materials such as burlap sacks or cotton can be securely sewn to preserve contents inside for heavy duty or long haul shipping. Hazardous chemicals or materials can also be safely transported and sealed using industrial strength sewing machines. These simple inventions have been expanded to allow bag-closing equipment to become one of the safest, most cost effective preservation methods to date.

After many failed attempts and patents the sewing machine was almost a forgotten piece of world history. As a result of consumer demand, and the industrial revolution, its uses have been expanded and capitalized upon to create value for consumers around the world.
