If you do just light sewing you might get by with one of the great new light weight machines they sell for $49.00, but when it comes to sewing canvas, sails, denim or other hard to work with materials you need a sewing machine that will not break the needle or jam every time you start sewing. That my friend is very frustrating and it will make you want to quit sewing.

Singer has been a brand you could depend on for years and when it comes to sewing heavy materials, it still can't be beat. I have sold other major brands in the past, like Necchi, Pfaff, Elna and Viking all great machine that would do the job. The thing I found was parts and repairs to keep a Singer in operating condition were so much cheaper and time in the shop was so much less. When you are making something and your sewing machine takes a turn for the worse you want it fixed quickly. The older Singer machines were built to sew heavy or light material, another thing that makes it a choice for many. There are two of my favorites, the Singer 15-91 and the Singer 201-2 model as they are both gear driven and don't need belts. They are smooth and will last indefinitely with very little need of repair. The main thing to do to these machines is the regular oiling and cleaning. If that is done you will have very little problems with these machines.

The next machine on the list is the singer 99 because it is lighter than the other two models with the about the same amount of torque to get the job done. What the choice machine for you will be is your decision and they all have toys that you can get for them. Some of the attachments that are fun I think are the Hemstitcher, Ruffler, and Undrebraider. Make sure you know how to use them or like a sewing machine that is not working right the job will be frustrating not fun. Get a book for attachments an learn the proper way to use the tool before you start.
